Welcome to CHUS

Message from the President

Chinese Historians in the United States (CHUS), an affiliated society of the American Historical Association (AHA), is dedicated to promoting scholarly exchange among its members and with historians around the world, as well as contributing to their research and teaching activities. CHUS welcomes anyone whose work involves Chinese history, regardless of their ethnic background, nationality, and professional status.

Founded in 1987, CHUS has faithfully served its members for nearly four decades. What began as a “student organization,” composed mostly of graduate students and visiting scholars from China, has transformed into a vibrant, multigenerational community of professional historians from the United States, China, and other parts of the world. In 2027, we will celebrate our 40th anniversary, a milestone that reflects our sustained growth and enduring impact.

As an affiliated organization, our presence at the AHA annual conference continues to expand.  For example, at the 2026 meeting in Chicago, we sponsored and co‑sponsored 12 panels. Every year or every two years, we organize an international conference that brings together our members and their colleagues from around the world. Our flagship journal, The Chinese Historical Review, a fully peer‑reviewed biannual publication, has continued to strengthen its reputation and attract an expanding readership. Increased visibility on social media platforms such as X and Facebook has further broadened our reach, enabling us to connect with wider audiences and potential new members.  Our online lecture series, “History Matters,” along with our periodic workshops, has consistently attracted sizable audiences, sometimes reaching into the hundreds, from all around the world.

Looking ahead, I am confident that CHUS will continue to thrive and serve our community effectively. Your ongoing support – whether through active participation, timely membership renewal, donations, or simply sharing your ideas and suggestions – is deeply appreciated and essential to our future.
